The Trussell Trust partners with UK communities and churches to run socially franchised foodbanks (the Foodbank Network). These provide three days of nutritionally-balanced, non-perishable food to people in crisis and going hungry.

Who you will be helping

The More Than Food programme will see foodbanks develop into community hubs, to not only provide people in need with emergency food but a range of support in one location. MTF already offers access to high-quality debt and money management advice. The ‘Eat Well Spend Less’ course is run in Foodbanks across the U.K. showing people how to cook and eat healthily and manage their household budgets. Our Social Enterprise projects comprise 14 Community Charity Shops and a number of innovative projects built around recycling and reuse provide workplace relevant volunteering opportunities for over 500 volunteers and generate around £1.2 million revenue per annum.

The Eat Well Spend Less (EWSL) course is part of the More Than Food (MTF) Project run by the Trussell Trust. EWSL is a 6 session course designed to help people on low budgets cook nutritious meals and manage their budgets more effectively. EWSL has been rolled out to 28 foodbanks in England and Wales in the last year. Further funding is required to be able to roll out to more food banks.

Equipment is portable, allowing sessions to be held at venues already accessed by members of the community. Beneficiaries will be identified by frontline referral agencies and foodbanks.

EWSL aims:IMG_0945© Alexandra Smart 2015_small

1 – to equip people with confidence in cookery skills so they are able to prepare and eat healthier food.

2 – to give an understanding of how to plan meals, both from an economic and nutritional point of view.

3 – to teach people simple techniques to enable them to budget more effectively and avoid getting into unintended debt. The pilot has demonstrated that the course empowers the participants with the knowledge and confidence to cook from scratch, to make healthier choices and to manage their budgets more effectively.

Foodbank volunteers receive training from the Trussell Trust, as well as an operating manual, online resources and email support to run the course in their communities. There is an annual quality assurance visit, with written feedback provided.
